Saving the WAC...Welcome to the Funny Farm

Karl Benson now has company.  Welcome John Marinanto to a new and exciting club.  The Big East Conference has joined the WAC in the football conference ICU this morning.

Syracuse and Pitt have now joined the ACC.  The Big East has 7 football members for 2012, just like the WAC.  The next salvo would be TCU backing out on their commitment and remaining in the Mountain West Conference.  This is something that I expect will be announced soon.  That could be followed up by the MWC adding either Utah State or Montana to round up to 12.  The WAC would still have 6 if Utah State leaves.  The best thing that could happen to the WAC at this point is if the Big 12 implodes leaving someone like Kansas State for the MWC to pick up.  Perhaps Iowa State will end up being a savior for WAC football.

Clearly this is not about the quality of the program.  Syracuse has not been Syracuse for a long time.  West Virginia, Cincinnati or Louisville would have been better choices from a quality of competition standpoint.  This was a conference money grab.  The Big East Conference and UConn, Rutgers, Louisville, Cincinnati, West Virginia, South Florida and TCU fans are the victims.  Perhaps all of college football will suffer.

BTW...did anyone else notice that the BYU/Utah game was not a sellout?
