What I like about this October

There are five college football Saturdays this October.  By the time the month ends, certain things will be a ton more clear than they are now.

MountainWest Preview

Utah State at BYU

The Aggies have the kind of offense that can create problems for the Cougar defense.  But what the Ags do not have is the quick and physical offensive line that Florida State has.  Bronco Mendenhall admitted that the Cougars played a little bit of prevent against CSU last week.  I expect a little of the same since the Aggies play the spread and BYU is not deep at the secondary.  Last year Diondre Borrel gave the Cougars a little headache, now the Aggies bring Turbin to the equation.  BYU will likely force a turnover or two.  The Aggies will be little match for the Cougar on other side of the ball either.  The Cougars have a few weapons of their own.  BYU 51 USU 22

New Mexico at Texas Tech

This has been nightmare season for the Lobos, and Tech is reeling from two straight losses to in-state competition.  Mike Leach's team is angry and the poor Lobos are in the way.  Mike Locksley's problems will make it worse.  This will get ugly early.  Tech 63 UNM 0

Air Force at Navy

Records mean little when the service academies collide.  This is a battle of equals and it is too bad that CBS will only show the Army/Navy game.  The entire nation deserves to see this one.  Air Force 23 Navy 21.

Wyoming at Florida Atlantic

Are the Cowboys beginning to gel, or were they just the beneficiary of UNLV's MWC curse?  A long road trip against the winless Owls should tell the tale.  Austyn Carta-Samuels should have another big game.  Against UNLV, he showed Laramie what is in their future.  He was recruited to drive this run and shoot offense and will make the Cowboys a problem for the rest of the MWC this year.  Wyoming 28 FAU 13

SMU at TCU

June Jones will evetually work his magic at SMU like he did at Hawaii, but resurrecting the Mustangs will take a little longer than two seasons.  This year's TCU team is tough defensively.  SMU should consider it a victory if they can even score.  TCU 17 SMU 0

New Mexico State at San Diego State

Speaking of rebuilding...you have two serious urban renewal projects going on here.  You have the coach that SDSU should have hired coming to Qualcomm Stadium fresh off a win over his in-state rival.  Chances are, that NMSU will have a little let down and the Aztecs can finally get Hoke his first win over a FBS team this year.  SDSU 24 NMSU 17

Colorado State at Idaho

The Vandals are 3-1 and so are the Rams.  But both teams have not been able to beet the only real quality team on their schedule.  Idaho lost at Washington and CSU lost at BYU.  The rams were able to pick off two Max Hall passes last week and that turned into only 3 Ram points.  They will have to do better than this to come away from the Kibbie Dome with a win this week.  Both teams will likely be bowl eligible at the end of the season and may get a rematch in December.  I say that the Rams win this one as they can move the ball consistently and present the Vandals with a lot of problems.  CSU 28 Idaho 17

UNLV at Nevada

Different year, same story for UNLV.  They looked so promising a couple of weeks ago.  But then they go to Laramie and lay an egg.  If Mike Sanford was not on the hot seat before the season, he is now.  He needs to get the Rebels bowling to keep his job.  He will get the Fremont Cannon, as the Wolfpack seems to have relocated to Alaska or some other place where they do not play College Football.  UNLV 35 Nevada 20

UC Davis at Boise State

You know, with all of the top five teams loosing this year...nah.  BSU 52 UCD 6

Road Trip of the Week

Sacramento State at Portland State

What makes this trip so interesting is all of the potential scenic detours.  May I suggest that you get off I-5 in Southern Oregon and take a Trip around Crater Lake National Park.  Not only is it cool just to think about the forces that created this scenic wonder, but the view is incredible all the way up.  I love the Cascades, and this trip demostrates why.

Too bad the trip is more interesting that the game appears to be.  The Vikings are still reeling from last week's disappointment against WSU.  And they were also close to beating the Grizzlies in Missoula the week before.  The Hornets looked anemic on both sides of the ball last week.  Both teams will be wishing to bounce back.  Only one will.  PSU 42 CSU-Sac 14

Eastern Washington at Idaho State

The Bengals must be in desparation mode.  They opened the season against two FBS teams and were pounded silly, especially in Norman.  Then they took a quick lead in Ogden and were eventually blown out.  The insult to injury was the loss to D-II Central Washington.  Now the Eagles ride into Pocatello to rub salt in their wounds.  ISU will get a win this season, but it will not be this week.  EWU's defense has been incredible the last two weeks.  EWU 28 ISU 10

Northern Colorado at Northern Arizona

The Bear offesne has had two weeks off.  They moved the ball  for a little over 300 yards aganst EWU but just could not score.  Last week, they only managed 137 yards total offense against Montana State and had to bring in their 2nd string QB after a MSU turnover to end their scoreless streak.  Northern Arizona has a little offensive firepower...actually they have lifted the roof off of the dome the past couple of weeks and one of their opponents was Montana.  This is another that could be ugly very early.  NAU 45 NCU 3

Montana State at Weber State

This one is personal to me and I will explain in the review.  I do not like seeing the Wildcats loose this cat fight.  Cameron Higgins has the tools to make quick work of the Bobcats...if he can take care of the ball.  The turnover bug cost Weber a game in Fort Collins and almost doomed them in Portland.  WSU needs to take care of the ball to win this game.  The other Cats have had problems with turnovers as well.  Win the turnover battle and win the game.  Sound familiar?  WSU 31 MSU 15.

Montana is idle and after a couple of close calls, I suspect that they are thankful for a week off.

Four more College Football Saturday's just like this one.
