Random Mid-October Musings

Rush Limbaugh and the Perfect Plot

Don't you see this as the perfect plot to get an NFL team back in Los Angeles?

-Owner who moves the team to St. L dies
-Team tanks
-Heirs put team up for sale
-Only volunteers to keep team in city include one controversial potential new owner
-Controversial owner drops bid, it can not succeed without him and fails
-New owners step forward to move team back to LA.

People are dogging the Mountain West Conference because they do not compare to last year.  Sure, the Conference is not as good as last year, but do not blame the big three.  BYU, TCU and Utah went 8-2 in non-conference games.  It is the rest of the conference that is bringing them down.

BYU is having trouble with their schedule in the future.  The 2010 schedule is set.  (Nevada, @Florida State, Washington, @Utah State)  But beyond that, it is all WAC.  Washington dropped BYU in 2011 and 2012.  The fact is, BYU is good.  It is a risk for a team like Oklahoma to put BYU on the schedule.  Look at what happened this year?  No one in a big conference wants to take that risk. If you have four non-conference games and win all four, then you can still make a bowl game by going 2-6 in conference.  (By finishing 7th in a 9-team conference).  Same reason so many basketball teams play a cup-cake non-conference schedule...get to 20 wins and it seems you can puch a post-season ticket.

There is bound to be a lot of talk about potential conference expansion, especially as the football season continues to develop for the MWC.  I don't expect that the MWC will be in a hurry to expand, unless there is a chance to get an automatic BCS bid.  We are three years away from the next BCS review.  If the MWC is to expand, it will be within the next year.
