My Apology to BYU Fans

True, I picked Wyoming to win.  I was only following a pattern.  After all; Florida State, San Diego State and TCU all had quarterbacks that could burn the Cougars with the deep ball.  Austyn Carta-Samuels is good enough to have a big game against BYU.  I only call it as I see it.  Obviously, I was wrong.  But that was not the only thing I was wrong about this last week.  To my credit, I was right about a Montana letdown and about the Wolfpack scoring 60 and I did pick UNLV over Colorado State.

Big Sky Review:

Montana 12 Idaho State 10

Those darn Grizzlies.  They dominated the game in every category including turnovers.  They gave the ball away twice on downs, threw one interception and fumbled twice.  Five empty red-zone trips.  And if they were playing anyone with an offensive to speak of, the Grizzlies would not have escaped.  But playing the Bengals, two field goals and an unconverted touchdown are good enough.  In spite of the bad luck in Pocatello this last weekend, Montana is now the sole unbeaten in the FCS.  The game was not what you would expect when an unbeaten meets a winless.

Sacramento State 38 Northern Colorado 35

The Hornets scored the first 31 points and then coasted.  This is the head shaker of the week.  How do you build a 5-score lead to only come out ahead by a single field goal?  As long as you win, I guess.  I have witnessed bigger combacks.  Many of us at Weber State remember a trip to Reno in 1991.

Montana State 28 Portland State 10

The Bobcats showed everyone else in the conference how to win a game.  They used a balanced attack, played a clean game, and held off a comeback attempt.  Yep, that is how it is done.

Mississippi 38 Northern Arizona 14

The Rebels used the Lumberjacks for a tune up.  NAU now gets to come to Ogden and hopefully they are not beat up too bad.

Mountain West

BYU 52 Wyoming 0

Watching the first quarter of this game, I saw Max Hall just toy with the Cowboy defense.  It was like watching a harvester work a corn field.  Similar story when the Cowboys had the ball.  Silencing the crowd in Laramie like this is just not an easy thing to do, especially for BYU.  The game plan that Dave Christensen worked out just didn't work.  Now Wyoming will have to win two of their last three to become bowl eligible.  The last 3: San Diego State, TCU and Colorado State.

Air Force 35 Army 7

This game was close for a little over a half, then Air Force found their offense.  Once that happened, it was a Falcon run away.  Air Force needed to find their offense sooner or later.

TCU 55 San Diego State 12

The Frogs win the style points battle vs Boise State again this week.  And the poll voters rewarded them with a #4 ranking.  If they get by the Utes this Saturday, they get to finish with Colorado State, with a 7-game loosing streak and New Mexico who has dropped all nine so far this season.  Some are even working the Frogs into the National Championship conversation, but one of the three teams ranked ahead of them will need to loose in the next three weeks.

Utah 45 New Mexico 14

I think that I just changed my mind about the MWC Freshman of the Year.  Jordan Wynn did well enough once he got his butterflies to fly in formation.  Eddie Wide III had a good game as well.  Can the Frosh Fenom be good enough in Fort Worth to win?

UNLV 35 Colorado State 16

Steve Fairchild just fired his offensive coordinator and took over the job himself.  (Re-assigned him to recruiting.)  Did not work this week.  The Rams are in freefall.  They saved Mike Sanford's job for at least one more week.  Good news for the Rams is that New Mexico is next.

Offensive Player of the Week: Utah RB Eddie Wide III
Defensive Team of the Week: BYU

I had to choose from five blowouts, so it being Veterans Day this week, I choose the service academy game.

WAC

Boise State 45 Louisiana Tech 35

No style points for the Broncos this week.  The WAC may not be the only conference where you can play like this every week and win every game, but the MWC is not one where you can.  BSU needs to win big the rest of the season to remain in the BCS conversation.

Hawaii 49 Utah State 36

I don't think that Greg McMackin saved his job with this win.  And it was too close for comfort by the end of the game.  Diondre Borel had a good game in spite of the loss.

Fresno State 31 Idaho 21

There was not enough Kibbie Dome Magic for this week.  Due to an injury to Nathan Ederle, Brian Reader made his first career start at quarterback and it took him until late in the third quarter to get warmed up.  He did get a 138 rating for the game.  Ryan Matthews had another yet big game for Fresno State.

Nevada 62 San Jose State 7

Another week, another sixty points for the Wolfpack.  Are you paying attention in Boise?  How about Fresno?  This is not a gimmicky run and shoot team.  This is a running team that can score points.
