Utah State 27 Utah 20
For the first time in the lifetime of both of my daughters, Utah State beat Utah. The Aggies are for real. They built an early lead, let the Utes tie the game and then held on in overtime. I was listening to the end of the game on KALL 700 while returning home from a family function. Bill Riley was certain that there was a pass interference on the last play of the OT on DeVonte Christopher, which would have given the Utes a fresh set of downs. But there was no call. Jordan Wynn was injured and left in the 2nd quarter. No word yet on whether he will play against BYU.
Utah MVP: WR Kenneth Scott
Utah State MVP: QB Chuckie Keeton
BYU 45 Weber State 13
The score of this game could have been much more wide open, but BYU could not get the job done on offense in the first quarter. But the defense did the job and BYU entered the half with a 21-0 lead. Most of the scoring was done with the BYU starters on the bench as Bronco Mendenhall treated the game much like an NFL head coach treats a pre-season game.
BYU MVP: WR Cody Hoffman
Weber State MVP: LB/P Troy Epperson
California 50 Southern Utah 31
When an FCS team plays an FBS team a moral victory is to keep the starters for the FBS team on the field in the 4th quarter. That is what the Thunderbirds did to California this week, as the Wildcats did to Fresno State last week. Cal had a 20-17 lead as the 4th quarter began, but then broke through with 4 touchdowns in a 7-minute stretch for a 19-point victory against Southern Utah.
SUU MVP: QB Brad Sorensen
