It is not taking too long to realize that having nine schools in one region is just too large. In football, you jump into region play right away. While girls soccer is not getting the opportunity to play non-region games at all. How to fix it? There are simply one or two solutions. First, you can demote a region member. Two, you can promote someone and split the division. The USHAA has said that the cut-0ff between 5-A and 4-A is 1500 students (Not counting Freshmen). So, you could demote Roy. But there are a few schools on the Wasatch Front above the 1500 student mark that are still in 4-A. Perhaps these school administrators decided to remain in 4-a or there were other reasons.
Schools above 1500 students in 4-a along the Wasatch Front according to Public School Review
Cache County:
Skyview (Smithfield--North of Logan)
Salt Lake County:
East
Olympus (Picked up students from Granite's closure)
Utah County:
Lehi
Timpanogos (Orem)
Provo
Springville
Payson
Spanish Fork
Tooele County:
Tooele
Here are schools above the 1400 mark that are in 4-a--keep in mind that Roy and Cyprus are below 1500 but above 1400.
Box Elder (Brigham City)
Mountain View (Orem)
So with plenty of choices, the USHSAA could easily split region 1. One can easily see why Sky View and Tooele remained on Class 4-a. But some of the other choices are a head scratcher. My suggestion is to promote Box Elder, East and Olympus. Utah Valley can have a new 5-A region in 2014.
Region 1a--6 Schools
Box Elder
Clearfield
Fremont
Roy
Syracuse
Weber
(For those of you not familiar with Davis County, the dividing line is I-15. Clearfield and Syracuse are the only schools west of I-15 in Davis County.)
Region 1b--6 Schools
Davis
East
Layton
Northridge
Viewmont
West
Olympus would fill into the region 2 slot vacated by West.
