I have seen a lot of twitter traffic that seems to confirm that the WAC will invite the following sometime in October:
All Sports:
Montana
Texas State
Texas San Antonio
All But Football:
Denver
Seattle
This will put the WAC at 9 schools for football and 11 schools in other sports? No so fast! This will likely please Louisiana Tech. Unsure if this will placate Hawaii. I suspect it will not. Benson indicates that 8 for football and 10 for basketball is the model they prefer at this time. This could be the sign that Hawaii will be going independent in football and joining the Big West for their other sports. Without Hawaii, the WAC would have a good travel model for basketball.
Potential Travel Partners:
San Jose State <--> Seattle
Montana <--> Idaho
Utah State <--> Denver
New Mexico State <--> Texas State
UTSA <--> La Tech
Hawaii in the Big West:
Hawaii would be the 10th Big West Member and the only one outside the State of California since Utah State and Idaho joined the WAC. They are would not be the only ones that play football, but the only ones playing at the FBS level. Cal Poly and Cal Davis park their non-football sports in the Big West. Five Big West programs are within an hour (in normal traffic) bus-ride of the Anaheim airport. It would be a good fit for Hawaii's non-football programs. Hawaii could travel-partner with CS-Northridge.
For football, they could have an easier time at scheduling than BYU. Who doesn't want to go to Hawaii in November?
We should know if all of this is happening by Halloween, or at the latest, by Thanksgiving.
