WAC Expansion Update 9/21/10

In one week from today, commissioner Karl Benson and the WAC Expansion committee are meeting with Texas State, UTSA and other schools interested in joining the conference. It is reported that no decisions will be made at that time. But Bleacher Report says that the invitation will go out to Texas State and UTSA.

I don't regard BR as the most reliable source, at least as reliable as this blog. But I love the King Karl moniker.

Note:

Ever wonder why BYU is not visiting Idaho in 2012 as part of their agreement with the WAC? Could it be that the agreement includes a visit to Portland or Sacramento in 2012? Both are rumored WAC expansion schools and both metros have sizable LDS populations and a good number of BYU alum. A visit to Portland to take on Portland State would mean 23,000 at PGE Park in 2012. It would help with their transition.

Also, it occurred to me that if the WAC adds Texas State, UTSA, Montana, Montana State, Portland State and Sacramento State, that it would be better to have Montana and Idaho in the same division. Both schools are accessible from Spokane. Same for having Utah State and Montana State in the same division. Both are accessible from Salt Lake City. Therefore, the division alignment would be...

West Division
Idaho
Hawaii
Montana
Portland State
Sacramento State
San Jose State
(Travel Partners--Hawaii<>Portland State, Idaho<>Montana, Sacramento State<>San Jose State)

East Division
Louisiana Tech
Montana State
New Mexico State
Texas State
UTSA
Utah State
(Travel Partners--La Tech<>UTSA, TX St<>NMex State, UT State<>MT State)

Also, to ensure that Montana and Montana State meet every season, there would be one team from the other division that each team would meet every year. Here is how this could work.

Montana<>Montana State (In-state rivals)
Hawaii<>UTSA (Easiest travel destination for Hawaii)
Utah State<>Idaho (Nice Border Battle)
San Jose State<>New Mexico State (WAC rivals)
Portland State<>Texas State (why not?)
Sacramento State<>Louisiana Tech (short straws)
