Hi Ben ... I'm usually more or less on board with you.

Having been a faculty member at Maryland (ACC) who is now a faculty member in Europe, I think that you might be underestimating the culture of the OLD ACC schools ... not Florida State, Miami, Syracuse, Pitt, BC, or Virginia Tech.

The OLD ACC ... Maryland, UNC, NCSU, Duke, Wake Forest, Virginia, Clemson, and Georgia Tech have a very strong tradition in which academic strength is essential. Syracuse, Miami, BC and Pitt fit with that as well.

I can't see the North Carolina schools being divided. I can ONLY see Maryland to the Big 10. Clemson ... not sure. Georgia Tech ... maybe the SEC, but doubtful. Virginia ... more in line with the North Carolina schools (particularly UNC). What about Virginia Tech? For all the speculation, don't forget the MAJOR issue when they were brought along into the ACC ... the issue of being in the same conference as Virginia. Sports aside, UVA drives the bus in that state ... not VTU.
